About the Work

"I’ve Been Expecting You" is a reimagining of one of Jonathan Yeo’s iconic collage works from his 2010 Los Angeles exhibition “Porn in the USA”. The portrait (of actor Sean Connery in character as fictional British secret agent James Bond) was made up of clippings from vintage porn magazines to playfully reference the dated moralities and objectification of women in the series.

Yeo dates his interest in film art and design back to a childhood fascination with those otherwise stylish 007 movies of the 1960s, which were elevated by the contributions of some of the greatest artists of the era, including legendary designer Ken Adam, composer John Barry, and innovative title designer Maurice Binder. Binder’s sequences were mini caricatures of the movies themselves: dazzling combinations of stills and footage of the actors with animated elements, usually involving guns, explosions and dancing girls, which continually pushed the boundaries of visual technology at the time.

This unique NFT piece digitally reimagines the Bond collage, Yeo’s playful “homage” to 1960s culture, in a dramatic style that is heavily reminiscent of those great early masters of movie design and VFX.

  • British, b. 1970

Jonathan Yeo (b. London, 1970) is one of the world’s leading portrait artists known for both traditional & experimental portraiture. His sitters include such diverse figures as Jony Ive, Dennis Hopper, Malala Yousafzai, Damien Hirst, Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Tony Blair, Prince Philip & Sir David Attenborough.

Between 2008-2010 Yeo concentrated on a new strand of collage portraiture using pornography as a medium. This stemmed from a reimagining of a portrait depicting, the then President of the USA, George W Bush which became one of the earliest examples of an artwork ‘going viral’.

He has exhibited widely in both the UK and abroad & in 2017, Yeo exhibited a series of works at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, including the first bronze sculpture entirely designed in virtual reality. More recently he has been building an immersive art installation using real-time 3D engines, created and minted his first NFT on SuperRare, and has developed an innovative, award-winning AR app recognized by the 2021 Lovie Awards; further shortlisted at the 2021 Design Week Awards and Auggie Awards also.

Yeo is a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery London, co-curator of the Soho House art collections and named GQ Magazine’s artist of the year for his explorations in creative technologies.
