About the Work

Evolution has designed a simplified interface through which we perceive reality, the criteria being to understand reality not fully but just sufficiently to survive, procreate and raise our offspring. There is no better example of this than the male Jewel Beetle, which frequently attempts to mate with a beer bottle in preference to a female. The Beetles' 'interface' is perennially searching for a glossy, golden and dimpled partner, criteria met perfectly by this particular vessel. A consequence of this perception failure has been to damage reproduction rates and put the survival of the species in jeopardy.

Although humans have more sophisticated perception, we are still prone to misdirection and therefore vulnerable to manipulation. This is something that has been exploited for centuries by religious iconography, political propaganda and advertising. Digital technology takes the misdirection to new realms, with slick, shiny smartphones that provide a new porthole into a world of artfully manipulative content.

  • Mat Collishaw
  • British, b. 1966

Mat Collishaw (b. 1966) is a key figure in the generation of British artists who emerged from Goldsmiths’ College in the late 1980s. He participated in Freeze (1988) and since his first solo exhibition in 1990 has exhibited widely internationally. Collishaw makes work that envelops the viewer in a twilight world poised between the alluring and the revolting, the familiar and the shocking, the poetic and the morbid. With a visual language that embraces diverse media, the beauty of Collishaw’s work is compelling – seductive, captivating, hypnotic – yet repelling as we perceive the darker fantasies within. A repulsion triggered not by what we see, but by our innate response to it. Something between beautiful and abject.

Selected recent solo exhibitions include World Expo, Dubai (2021); Djanogly Gallery, NoTngham (2020); Dialogues, Sorigue Foundation, Madrid (2019); The Grinders Cease, Blain Southern, Berlin (2019); The Nerve Rack, Ushaw College Durham (2019); The Mask of Youth, Queens House, Greenwich, London (2019); Standing Water, Rudolfinum, Prague (2018); Thresholds, Somerset House, London (2017); The Centrifugal Soul, Blain Southern, London (2017); New Art Gallery Walsall (2016); Black Mirror, Galleria Borghese, Rome (2014), This Is Not An Exit, Blain|Southern, London (2013), Bass Museum of Art, Florida (2013); Pino Pascali Museum Foundation, Bari (2013); Mat Collishaw: Afterimage, Arter, Istanbul (2013) and Magic Lantern at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2010).
